Social Bookmarking--a New Tool

Social bookmarking--the name for a variety of web 2.0 tools that allow you to collect and share your favorite websites--has been around for a while, with Delicious and Diigo leading the pack. Both of these sites have evolved quite a bit since their debut several years ago. Now there's Pearltrees. My colleague Christine used it just the other day to create a collection of websites she will have teachers explore next week. Below you see an example from their site that shows how someone used it to create a collection of resources for the Common Core Standards.

Take a look and give it a try. (Or, if you prefer, try out Diigo or Delcious.) (In all cases you'll have to create an account.) I think social bookmarking has application both as a teacher productivity tool AND as a way to share sites with students. What do you think?

This seems to be a very user friendly site. I just played with it as a way of storing all of the websites I go as a teacher (onine textbook, swift, tlp, skyward etc.). I can completely see the benefits of this if you are a teacher who is going to be having students do a research project, they can use the offered websites for research and it is all orgainized in one place. It would also be great to create one for a new teacher (maybe a district on and a department specific one) to make it easy to find all the suggested places to use. The one downside to using it on a district computer that I found is that I don't have access to install the pearler which would make adding new websites even easier.

I like this idea to as Jennifer mentioned above. I use swift a lot for my students, but if the website is down, then this would be a good choice to use. I agree that not being able to downlead pearler on our computers is a downer, this could be an easy fix I believe. Kimberly - you show us some great sites that I so enjoy!

I will use this in my class next year. We do a lot of research projects in social studies and there is no real good way to show students websites. I can put them into a file folder one by one, or in a word doc. This would allow my to post all the websites out in the open and make it very easy for students to see what ones they should use. It is also a good way to keep track of the websites you use. I think this is a great idea and will try it out next year.

I like this concept. I can never remember what I title something when I add it to my favorites. It would be great to have pearls for the different types of searches and sites that I use. I could also see this as a way to teach students how to organize and share research information. I think this would be very valuable in a classroom. I wish it could be saved to my own computer though.
