What is Learn and Earn?
Learn and Earn is a way for teachers to discover and explore new technology tools, ideas, and resources. Each week, a new topic will be posted to the Learn and Earn blog for you to explore in whatever way you wish.
How will I know when there’s a new post?
We’ll post to the blog each Thursday. We’ll send everyone a brief email with the gist of that week’s post and a link to the blog (kind of like the F1 Tuesday email) so you can decide whether or not you want to click over to the blog and read that week’s post.
Can I get clock hours?
Yes, the option to earn clock hours exists for those interested. However, you don’t need to sign up for them in advance. All certificated staff will get the brief Learn and Earn email each week. It’s up to individual teachers to determine how they want to participate. Details about earning clock hours are below.
What levels of participation exist?
The level of participation you engage in is up to you. At one end of the continuum, you could ignore the week’s post. Or, you could simply just glance at the week’s post and see if it’s for you. Or you could read the post and consider applying what you learn. Or, at the other end of the continuum, you could read the post and respond by leaving a thoughtful comment on the blog. (The last option is required to earn clock hours.)
Do I have to respond every week?
No. Some weeks the post will grab your attention, other weeks it may not. You can change how you participate from week to week. However, IF YOU WANT TO EARN CLOCK HOURS, you must comment at least 6 times between now and the end of the year to earn 3 clock hours. The first week’s post will provide clear expectations. If you comment more than 6 times, you can earn additional clock hours. (For every additional week you comment, you can earn .5 more clock hours. For instance, if you comment 7 times, you’ll earn 3.5 clock hours. Comment 10 times and earn 5 clock hours.)
What if I don’t want to participate in the class?
No problem, just simply ignore the emails.
What is the time period of this class?
October 27, 2011 – May 17, 2012 (We’ll post 24 times over the course of the year. If you comment each time, that’s 12 clock hours.)
What do I have to do to earn the clock hours?
In order to earn clock hours, you must submit a thoughtful comment to the class blog at least 6 times during the class period. Prompts will be posted on Thursdays. For your comment to count toward clock hours, you must submit your comment by 8:00 a.m. the following Thursday and follow these guidelines:
1. Type in your comment to the space provided. See example below.
2. Include your first and last name followed by “CH”(for “clock hour”) in the Name box (see below) so we’ll know who you are and give you clock hour credit for that week.
3. In addition, provide your email address and select one of the options in the Subscribe to drop down list IF you’d like to be notified via email when someone comments on the post or replies to your comment.
4. Press Submit Comment.

We’ll keep an attendance/participation list on our end. We’ll let you know in June how many (if any) clock hours you earned and send you the necessary paperwork.
Can I still comment if I don’t want clock hours?
Why, yes, of course you can! Even if you aren’t completing the class for clock hours, we hope you will participate by reading and commenting on posts and/or someone else’s comment any time you’d like.
